Recent Event 11/2/2015 On Thursday October 22nd El Rancho High School was placed on lock down because of a bomb/gun threat. At 8:15 am authorities were contacted due to the threat that was made online via twitter. When police detained the student that tweeted the threat and searched him he didn't have any weapons. The student was detained and has not returned to school. What do you believe the student should be charged with? Why?

I really think they shouldn't use this to go off on the kid and make it a big deal if they never took the time before to make it a big deal and look into it to let us know or make us realize a bit more how one little thing can get us into so much trouble.

Although the threat could have resulted in lives being at risk the important thing was that no one was hurt, which leads me to believing that the minor should be charged with a misdemeanor. The reason being he did not go with the intention of actually hurting anyone, since he meant it as a joke, and just as well no weapon was found that would have led to evidence in his seriousness of the threat.

Although the student did commit an error that these days you just can't not take serious anymore, I believe he should still have a chance to redeem himself after something that was blown out of proportion. At the time of the incident it would've been reasonable to charge him with a felony but after they announced the report that he was unarmed and no weapons were found at home either, it could be said that he made an error, not a small one, but an error nonetheless. Therefore, he should be granted a second chance through following the dispositions for his probation.

Even though the student meant what he posted on social media as a joke, he should be charged with a misdemeanor because he really did not have the intension to harm anyone at school. The student is young so he made a big mistake. In this world where social media can be accessed by anyone, it is important to teach these young students what not to stay on social media even if it is meant as a joke because any kind of threat, joke or not, is taken seriously by the authorities. The student should be given a second chance to redeem himself and learn from his mistake.

In my opinion I think the student should be charged with a felony. It was a terrorist issue. And it was very serious, even in the eyes of the people in the classroom with him. I was in the classroom next door and I was scared so much and it is not a situation where he should be let go because he is young. He knew what he was doing there, he submitted the tweet. Even if they found no weapon on him he should not be let go. So much could have gone wrong in this situation, but just because he did not do anything at the end m, doesn't mean we should leave this situation alone. Everyone knows not to say not tweet things like that. It was a terrorist threat. He should get charged with a felony. Terrorist threats especially on a school should not be made. He shouldn't be let go easily just because he's young.

As a first time offender and a minor this student should not face severe charges. His tweet is a prime example of how technology twists meanings of phrases said by people. If he had said this in person I'm sure many people would have recognized his sarcasm. Because he wrote it in a tweet it was void of emotion. If he should receive punishment, it should be decided by his peers, because it was us he disrupted that day. He shouldn't have to become a statistic over a misinterpreted joke.

This situation is sensitive because of recent successful shootings and stabbings at schools. I personally do not take this situation lightly. Wether he took action or not, it was still an eerie threat. If I was a parent I would not want my child sitting next to a kid with a mindset like that. Had I known him before my perception of him might be altered but in a court of law there is no sympathy towards a defendant. I don't believe he should be allowed back at ERHS because he will most likely be bullied for his actions. I also believe parents will not agree that he should be back on campus. I hope he learns from his mistake and chooses to improve his emotions.

The student should be charged with a misdemeanor because he was not carrying any weapons or was a true harm to the school. Although, he should be expelled for not being cautious about what he tweets and not measuring the consequences to his actions.

I strongly believe that the defendant should be charged with a misdemeanor only due to the fact that he tweeted in a "joking" manner. This situation was very serious because it is considered a "terrorist act" but no other evidence leads to the conclusion that he was truly leading into an actual attack backing up his statement that it was truly just a "joke". Unless further evidence suggests other wise he should be charged with a misdemeanor.

The student should receive a felony charge because, although no one was hurt, there was no way of knowing if that this would be the outcome. The intent was there, and the student should be charged for it.

I believe he should get a misdemeanor for having to have caused a chaos and may have had the possibilities of hurting someone. Istead of the school using him as an "example" of how the school responds to there types of situations I think they should help him in case he has any family or personal problems. He's a typical teenager that just wanted to make it all a joke, but I'm sure he has learned his lesson of thinking twice before you do something.

I think that they overreacted because it was just a joke, but it is also the students fault for being dumb and posting something that will scare people

I think the student would be charged with a huge fine and community service for threatening the school. He deserves all of this because not only did he alert the authorities but he put it on social media where the whole public could see. This threat made it look intentional thus making the situation worse

I feel as if he shouldn't be charged with a felony, because it is used as an example which is unfair. He should come to teen court and be judged by his own peers and therefore learn a lesson from his mistake. He didn't intentionally mean harm; he is a good student has good grades and is involved with extra curriculars such as sports.

I think that he should be charged with a misdemeanor and get a lot of hours of community service for threatening the school. And maybe from this experience he now knows better than to be posting stuff like that on social media.
